Programs

Marching Band

Our marching band, a varsity sport in Glen Ridge, unites around 40 students who perform dynamic musical shows while marching in step. Open to all eighth graders—no auditions or prior experience needed—we offer opportunities to play various instruments or join the color guard for non-instrumentalists. Many students say: "We might grumble during practice, but we love the excitement of performances and miss it when the season ends."

Jazz Band

Our Jazz Band enriches students' musical experiences through the exploration of jazz genres like blues, swing, bebop, fusion, and Latin. Open to all high school students who are part of other school music programs and can read music, no auditions are required. Rehearsing once a week after school from December to May, the ensemble welcomes a variety of instruments—from saxophones and trumpets to guitars and vocals. Students playing less typical jazz instruments like French horn or violin are also encouraged to join and may transpose parts as needed.

Concert Band

Our Concert Band brings together around 60 student musicians from seventh grade onwards—no auditions or prior experience required. They perform a diverse repertoire, including works by Bach, Copland, Holst, Khachaturian, and Ravel, at two annual concerts held at Ridgewood Avenue Auditorium. Students play a wide range of instruments like flutes, saxophones, trumpets, tubas, guitars, and percussion. As a daily academic class, sessions begin with Bach chorales for warm-up and focus on performance pieces, music theory, and instrumental techniques. Join us to celebrate the musical talents of our students at our winter and spring concerts!

Chorus

Our Chorus is a full-year, daily class open to all high school students who love to sing—no auditions required. Students explore a diverse repertoire ranging from classical and jazz to pop, Broadway, and opera, often singing in multiple languages. They participate in community events and fundraisers like the citrus sale and Valentine's Day "Singing Grams." Performances include winter and spring concerts, competitions like the Music in the Parks festival, and appearances at events such as the Golden Circle Senior Citizens luncheon and the Chinese New Year celebration.

Winter Guard

The Color Guard is the non-instrumental section of the Marching Band, where students interpret music through dance and synchronized spinning of flags, sabers, and rifles, enhancing performances with backdrops and props. Typically comprising five to eight students, they perform at home football games, contributing to the band's overall score and being judged in their own auxiliary category. Students can join in the spring without auditions or prior experience. During the winter, they meet on Mondays to rehearse and perform at basketball games, providing year-round opportunities to develop their skills and support school events.

Percussion Ensemble

Open to all high school students—no auditions needed—the Percussion Ensemble meets two hours weekly from December through June. Students explore a variety of percussion instruments like drums, xylophones, marimbas, and more, tackling challenging pieces that highlight percussion beyond standard band music. Whether enhancing existing skills or trying something new, participants conclude the year with an evening performance in June at the high school.
